Marie d'Évreux (born in 1303, died October 31, 1335) was an important noblewoman from the House of Capet. She was the oldest child of Louis d'Évreux and Margaret of Artois. Marie became the Duchess of Brabant when she married John III, Duke of Brabant.
Her grandmother, Marie of Brabant, was also a Duchess of Brabant. This meant Marie d'Évreux was a second cousin to her husband, John III.
Her Family
Marie was the oldest of five children in her family. Her younger brothers and sisters were:
- Charles d'Évreux, who was the Lord of Étampes.
- Philip III of Navarre, who became the King of Navarre. He was married to Joan II of Navarre.
- Jeanne d'Évreux, who became the Queen of France. She married Charles IV of France.
Her Marriage and Children
In 1311, Marie married John III, Duke of Brabant. This marriage helped improve the relationship between their families and with France.
Marie and John III had six children together:
- Joanna, Duchess of Brabant (born 1322, died 1406)
- Margaret of Brabant (born February 9, 1323, died 1368). She married Louis II of Flanders in 1347.
- Marie of Brabant (born 1325, died March 1, 1399). She was the Lady of Turnhout and married Reginald III of Guelders in 1347.
- John (born 1327, died 1335 or 1336)
- Henri (died October 29, 1349)
- Godfrey (died after February 3, 1352)
Marie's daughter, Joanna, was special because she was the first woman to become the Duchess of Brabant all by herself. This meant she ruled the duchy in her own right, not just as a wife.
Marie d'Évreux died on October 31, 1335. She was about 31 or 32 years old.
