Becoming a Beauty Queen
Miss Venezuela 2017 Competition
Mariem Velazco is 177 centimeters (about 5 feet 10 inches) tall. She took part in the Miss Venezuela 2017 contest. She represented her home state, Barinas.
In this big competition, she was one of 24 young women from all over Venezuela. Mariem won two special awards: Best Style and Miss Photogenic. This means judges thought she had great fashion sense and looked wonderful in pictures.
She took over the title from Diana Croce. Diana was the first runner-up in Miss Venezuela 2016 and second runner-up in Miss International 2017.
Winning Miss International 2018
Mariem Velazco was crowned Miss International 2018 on November 9, 2018. The event took place at the Tokyo Dome City Hall in Tokyo, Japan. The previous winner, Kevin Lilliana Junaedy from Indonesia, placed the crown on Mariem's head.
During the competition, Mariem wore a special Venezuelan native headdress. She also wore a beautiful evening gown decorated with pearls.
Her victory was very important for Venezuela. It was the eighth time a Venezuelan contestant won the Miss International crown. This makes Venezuela the country with the most wins in this pageant's history.
