Mariholm is a small island located in the very cold region of Antarctica. It's part of a group of islands known as the South Orkney Islands.
This island is special because it's the highest and the most eastern island in its small group. It lies about 0.5 kilometers (0.3 nautical miles) south of another island called Moe Island.
Discovering Mariholm
Mariholm was first mapped and named by Captain Petter Sorlle. He was exploring the South Orkney Islands between 1912 and 1913. During his journey, he created a map using a method called a "running survey." This means he mapped the area as his ship sailed along.
Today, Mariholm, like many islands in Antarctica, has no people living on it. It is part of the Antarctic Treaty System. This is an important agreement among different countries to keep Antarctica peaceful and used only for scientific research.
