The Marilyn Diptych is a famous painting made in 1962 by the American Pop artist Andy Warhol. It shows many pictures of the movie star Marilyn Monroe. This huge artwork is one of Warhol's most well-known pieces featuring the actress.
The painting has 50 images of Marilyn Monroe. Each image comes from a single publicity photograph from her 1953 film, Niagara. Warhol used this same photo for many of his paintings and prints of Marilyn. The Marilyn Diptych was finished just weeks after Marilyn Monroe died in August 1962.
Warhol used a special art method called silkscreen to create this painting. The twenty-five images on the left side of the painting are in color. The twenty-five images on the right side are in black and white.
The Marilyn Diptych is now kept in the collection of the Tate museum in London.
Using Other People's Images
Andy Warhol was known for using images that already existed. He often took publicity photos or other pictures that were available to the public. Sometimes, he did not own these original images. This sometimes led to disagreements with the people who owned the original photos.
For example, Warhol used a publicity photo of Marilyn Monroe for his Marilyn Diptych and other works. He did not have permission to use this photo. Later, he or his art estate had to make agreements with the photo's owner.
Warhol also used the famous Campbell's Soup logo in his art without asking permission first. Eventually, Campbell's Soup was okay with it because his art gave them free advertising. This shows how Warhol often used images that were not his own to create new art.
