Marilyn E. Strutchens was born in 1962. She is an African-American math educator. This means she helps train teachers who will teach math in middle and high schools. She also works to make sure all students have a fair chance to learn math well.

Marilyn Strutchens was once the president of a group called the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. Today, she is a special professor at Auburn University. She helps lead the program for teaching secondary math.

Her Journey in Education

Marilyn Strutchens first studied fashion merchandising in college. Later, she became a middle school math teacher. She loved teaching math!

She decided to learn even more about math education. In 1993, she earned a special degree called a doctorate from the University of Georgia. For her doctorate, she wrote a big research paper. It was about how different things in society and culture affect how well African-American sixth graders learn math.

After finishing her studies, she became a professor. She taught at the University of Kentucky from 1993 to 1995. Then, she taught at the University of Maryland, College Park until 2000. In 2000, she joined the team at Auburn University.

At Auburn, she became a very important professor. She was named a "Distinguished Professor" in 2009. Later, in 2015, she became an "Endowed Professor." These titles show how much her work is valued.

From 2011 to 2013, she led the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators as its president. This shows her strong leadership in the field.

Special Recognition

In 2017, Marilyn Strutchens was chosen for a special honor. She gave the Judith E. Jacobs Lecture at a big conference for math teacher educators. This means she was asked to give an important talk to many other experts in her field.
