Marine Air, West Coast (MarAirWest) was an important part of the United States Marine Corps during World War II. It was a special command that helped train and equip Marine aviation (air) units. MarAirWest was set up on January 22, 1943, and its main job was to support Marine pilots and planes on the West Coast of the United States.
History of Marine Air, West Coast
Marine Air, West Coast started on January 22, 1943. It was first called Marine Fleet Air, West Coast (MarFAirWest). Its main base was at Naval Air Station San Diego in California. Brigadier General Lewie G. Merritt was its first leader.
The main goal of MarFAirWest was to get Marine aviation units ready for war. This included training pilots, getting them equipment, and making sure they had everything they needed. In April 1943, many aviation units joined MarFAirWest. This command also sent people and supplies to other Marine air groups fighting in the Pacific War.
In January 1946, the group's name changed to Marine Air, West Coast. It also took over some duties from another Marine Corps office. Its job stayed the same: supporting Marine aircraft units. The command was closed down on October 1, 1947. This happened when the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing returned from overseas. They took over the responsibilities of MarAirWest.
