Mario Luzi (born October 20, 1914 – died February 28, 2005) was a famous Italian poet. He wrote many books of poetry and was known for his deep and thoughtful writing. Later in his life, he was even made a "Senator for life" in Italy, which is a special honor.

About Mario Luzi
Early Life and Education
Mario Luzi was born on October 20, 1914, in a place called Castello, near Sesto Fiorentino, Italy. His parents were Ciro Luzi and Margherita Papini. He grew up in Castello and went to primary school there.
Later, he moved to Florence to study. He attended a special high school called liceo classico Galileo. This school focuses on classical subjects like Latin and Greek. Mario then went to university in Florence. He earned a degree in French literature. For his final project, he wrote about the French writer François Mauriac.
This time in Florence was very important for Mario. He met many other poets and writers.
Becoming a Poet and Teacher
Mario Luzi's first book of poems, called La barca (which means "The Boat"), was published in 1935. This was the start of his long career as a poet.
In 1938, he began working as a high school teacher. He taught in different Italian cities, including Parma, San Miniato, and Rome.
In 1940, he published another book of poems, Avvento notturno. After World War II, in 1945, he returned to Florence. There, he taught at a science-focused high school.
Later Works and Recognition
Mario Luzi continued to write and publish many books throughout his life. Some of his works include Un brindisi e Quaderno gotico (1946) and Onore del vero (1952).
In 1955, he started teaching French literature at Florence University. He taught in the Political Studies Institute.
Between 1963 and 1983, he published several more important books. These include Nel magma (1963) and Dal fondo delle campagne (1965). In 1978, his book Al fuoco della controversia won the famous Premio Viareggio, a major Italian literary prize.
He also won the Aristeion Prize in 1991 for his work Frasi e Incisi di un Canto Salutare. In the same year, he was suggested for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He never won the Nobel Prize, but he was a highly respected poet.
Final Years
Mario Luzi's last book, L'avventura della dualità, was published in 2003.
In October 2004, he received a very special honor. He was appointed to the Italian Senate as a Senator for life. This means he became a permanent member of the Italian Parliament. This appointment was made by the President of Italy, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
Mario Luzi passed away just a few months later, on February 28, 2005, in Florence.
