History of Marion
Early Settlers and Land Purchases
The first person to settle in what would become Shelby County was James Wilson. He built a cabin there in 1819. In 1820, a large area of land, known as the "New Purchase" lands, officially became part of the United States. This meant the land was now available for people to buy.
James Wilson and other settlers went to the Government Land Office in Brookville in 1820. They went there to officially buy the land they had already settled on.
Founding the Town
After returning from Brookville, James Wilson brought a surveyor with him. A surveyor is someone who measures and maps land. Working with John Sleeth, they planned out a town. They designed streets, alleys, and a public square. This was the very first town planned in what would become Shelby County. The state government officially approved the creation of Shelby County on December 31, 1821.
The community was named after Francis Marion. He was an important army officer during the American Revolutionary War.
Post Office and School
A post office opened in Marion in 1823. This allowed people to send and receive mail. In September 1836, the post office's name was changed to "Noah Post Office." It stayed open until 1902.
Marion also had a high school for many years. However, this school closed around 1908.
