The Marion Castle, also known as Terre Bonne, is a beautiful castle-like house. It is located at 1 Rogers Road in the Shippan Point area of Stamford, Connecticut. This historic building was built in 1914. It was recognized as an important historical site and added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 1, 1982.
History of Marion Castle
The Marion Castle was built for Frank J. Marion and his family. They owned and lived in the house until Frank Marion's death in 1963. Frank J. Marion was a very important person in the early movie industry. He helped create films called "one-reelers" that were shown in special theaters called nickelodeons. Later, he also produced silent films.
Design and Architecture
The famous New York City architectural firm of Hunt & Hunt designed Marion Castle. This firm was run by Joseph Howland Hunt and Richard Howland Hunt. The castle was designed to look like a French chateau, which is a large country house or castle in France. It was finished in either 1914 or 1916.
Recent Ownership and Use
Since 1998, the Marion Castle has been owned by Thomas L. Rich. He is a real estate developer from Stamford. Mr. Rich has allowed the home to be used often for events that help the community and non-profit groups.
