Marion Long (1882 – 1970) was a talented Canadian artist. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1922, which is a special recognition for artists. Marion Long was often asked to paint portraits, especially of people in the military.

Marion Long's Life Story

Marion Long studied art at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. She also learned from famous artists like Laura Muntz Lyall and Charles Hawthorne. Later, from 1907 to 1908, she went to the Art Students League in New York City. There, she learned from other important artists such as Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase.

In 1913, Marion Long opened her own art studio in Toronto. She even worked in Studio One of the famous Studio Building. This was a place where many well-known Canadian artists had their studios.

During World War I, in 1915, Marion Long created three special drawings for The Canadian Magazine. These drawings showed what the war was like from a woman's point of view. They included pictures titled Home on Furlough, Looking at the War Pictures, and Killed in Action. In 1933, she became a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

Being Part of Art Groups

Marion Long was a member of several important art organizations:

  • Royal Canadian Academy of Arts: She became an Associate member in 1922 and a full Academician in 1933.
  • Ontario Society of Artists: She joined this group in 1916.
  • Ontario Institute of Painters
  • Heliconian Club: She was the President of this club in 1919.

Special Awards and Honors

Marion Long received the King Haakon VII medal of liberation. This award was given to her for her help to Norway during World War II.

A Famous Painting's Price

One of Marion Long's paintings, a small sketch called Little Fruit Store, sold for a high price. In April 2021, it was sold for $40,250.00 Canadian dollars at the Heffel Auction. This shows how much her art is valued.
