Marion Isaac McClinton (July 26, 1954 – November 28, 2019) was an American theatre director, playwright, and actor. He was a very talented person who worked in plays.

He was nominated for a big award called the Tony Award for directing the play King Hedley II. He also won the 2000 Vivian Robinson Audelco Black Theatre Award. Plus, he received an Obie Award in 1999–2000 for directing Jitney.

Marion McClinton's Early Career

Marion McClinton started his theatre journey at the Penumbra Theatre Company. This theatre is located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, which is where he was born.

In 1981, he acted as the narrator in August Wilson's first play, Black Bart and the Sacred Hills. He stayed active at Penumbra Theatre until the early 1990s.

Directing August Wilson's Plays

McClinton became very well-known for directing plays by August Wilson. He directed all of Wilson's plays. He worked on them both on Broadway and in other theatres across the country.

People often called him "One of the leading Wilson directors." He took over from another famous director, Lloyd Richards. McClinton directed the first showing of Wilson's play King Hedley II in 2001.

Working at Other Theatres

Marion McClinton was also an associate artist at Center Stage. This theatre is in Baltimore, Maryland. There, he directed several of August Wilson's plays. He also directed other plays like Les Blancs.

He directed plays at many other famous theatres too. These included the Pittsburgh Public Theater and the Guthrie Theater. He also worked at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Playwrights Horizons.

At the Goodman Theatre, he directed a special reading of Fences. This was part of a celebration for August Wilson in 2007. Before that, he had directed King Hedley II and Jitney at the Goodman.

In May 2009, he directed an Off-Broadway show called Pure Confidence. This was part of a festival called Americas Off Broadway.
