Marios Makrionitis was a Greek Catholic leader and a member of the Jesuits. He served as the Archbishop of Athens from 1953 until he passed away in 1959.

His Journey as a Church Leader

Marios Makrionitis was born on October 8, 1913. His birthplace was a small village called Vari [] on the island of Syros in Greece.

He decided to join the Jesuits. This is a religious order of priests and brothers in the Catholic Church. He became a priest on July 15, 1941.

In 1952, Marios Makrionitis was given an important role. He became the Apostolic Vicar of Thessaloniki. This meant he was a special representative of the Pope in that area.

A year later, on March 11, 1953, Pope Pius XII chose him to be the Archbishop of Athens. This is a very high position in the Catholic Church. His official ceremony to become a bishop, called an episcopal consecration, happened on May 10, 1953. Bishop Georges Xenopulos led this special ceremony.

As Archbishop, Marios Makrionitis helped organize the first-ever Catholic Book Exhibition in Greek history. This event took place at the Athens Catholic Club.

Sadly, on April 8, 1959, Marios Makrionitis was badly hurt in a car accident. He passed away later that day or early the next morning. After his death, Venediktos Printesis became the new Archbishop.
