Marie Grace Michelle "Mariz" Bade Umali-Tima (born March 4, 1980) is a well-known Filipino journalist and TV host. She is famous for being a main news anchor on Balitanghali Weekend, a news program on GMA News TV. Mariz Umali also hosts other popular TV shows like i-Witness and Born to Be Wild. She is also one of the hosts of the morning show Unang Hirit.

Early Life and Education

Mariz Umali was born on March 4, 1980. When she was younger, she dreamed of becoming a doctor. Because of this, she first studied pharmacy at the University of the Philippines Diliman. However, she later changed her mind and switched to broadcast communications. She graduated from the University of the Philippines Diliman with honors, earning a degree in broadcast communications.

In 2000, while still a student, Mariz ran for Chairman of the UP Diliman University Student Council. She was very involved in student life and was also a member of the UP-CMC Broadcast Association. This group is a non-profit organization for students in the College of Mass Communication.

Career in Journalism

Mariz Umali started her career at GMA Network in 2001, when she was almost 21 years old. She began as a producer and researcher, helping to cover the 2001 general elections in the Philippines. Soon after, she became a news reporter. Her very first live news report was from a press conference at PAGASA, the Philippine weather agency.

Mariz considers her exclusive interview with the suspects in the Nida Blanca murder case as a major turning point in her career. She has also reported on challenging events, such as the Manila Peninsula siege and Typhoon Parma (known locally as Pepeng).

Hosting and Awards

Besides being a reporter, Mariz Umali is also a respected news anchor and host. She has appeared on many GMA Network and GMA News TV programs. These include Balitanghali Weekend, News TV Live, Born to Be Wild, and Out of Control. She also used to deliver news updates on the GMA Flash Report.

Mariz has received awards for her work. She earned an Anak TV Seal award for her role in the public affairs program Hired! (which was previously called May Trabaho Ka). She was also a host for the travel show Travel: More Fun In The Philippines. In 2012, she and her co-hosts were nominated for Best Lifestyle/Travel Show Hosts at the 26th PMPC Star Awards for Television. The next year, in 2013, she and her co-hosts for the morning news program Kape at Balita were nominated for Best Morning Show Hosts at the 27th PMPC Star Awards for Television.

Mariz is often invited to host or speak at various events. In May 2019, she won the Best Female Field Reporter award at the 17th Gawad Tanglaw Awards. In July 2019, she became one of the main news presenters and hosts for GMA 7's morning show, Unang Hirit.

In June 2024, Mariz Umali had a special one-on-one interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This interview happened during the president's visit to Manila.

Personal Life

Mariz Umali grew up in a Roman Catholic family and is proud of her faith. She was also a member of her church's choir.

She has been married to fellow journalist Raffy Tima since December 8, 2012. They had worked together since 2001 before they got married.
