Marjorie Swank Matthews (born July 11, 1916 – died June 30, 1986) was an American bishop in the United Methodist Church. She made history by becoming the very first woman to serve as a Methodist bishop.
Early Life and Work
Marjorie Swank Matthews was born on July 11, 1916, in Onaway, Michigan. Her parents were Jesse Alonzo and Charlotte Mae Swank. After World War II, she divorced and became a single mother. To support herself and her son, William Jesse Matthews, she worked at a manufacturing company.
Education and Learning
Marjorie Matthews was a dedicated student. In 1967, she earned her bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University. She graduated with top honors. She then went on to study religion. In 1970, she received a Bachelor of Divinity degree. This was from Colgate Rochester Divinity School. She continued her studies at Florida State University. There, she earned a master's degree in religion. In 1976, she also received a doctorate in humanities.
Her Path to Ministry
While Marjorie Matthews was completing her education, she also served churches. She worked as an elder in Michigan, New York, and Florida. She became the second woman to be a district superintendent. This is an important leadership role in the United Methodist Church. From 1976, she led the Grand Traverse District.
Becoming a Bishop
In July 1980, a special meeting was held. It was for the North Central Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. Out of 460 delegates, only 23 were women. These delegates came from nine states. They included Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
Thirteen people were running for three bishop positions. After many votes, Marjorie Matthews was elected. She became the first woman bishop in the United Methodist Church. This historic event happened on July 17, 1980, in Dayton, Ohio. She served as bishop for the Wisconsin area. She retired in 1984 after four years. Marjorie Matthews passed away on June 30, 1986. She died in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
