Mark Gordon was born on March 14, 1957. He is an American politician who has been the 33rd governor of Wyoming since January 7, 2019. He is a member of the Republican Party. Before becoming governor, he served as the state treasurer for Wyoming. He was appointed to that job in 2012 by then-governor Matt Mead.

Early Life and Education
Mark Gordon was born in New York City. His parents, Catherine and Crawford Gordon, moved to a ranch in Kaycee, Wyoming, in 1947. Mark grew up on this family ranch in Johnson County, Wyoming.
He went to Middlebury College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1979.
Mark Gordon's Political Career
Running for Congress in 2008
In 2008, Mark Gordon ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives for Wyoming. This was for the seat held by Barbara Cubin, who was retiring. He ran in the Republican primary election.
Gordon received support from Wyoming's two biggest newspapers. However, he lost the primary election to Cynthia Lummis.
Serving as Wyoming's Treasurer
Mark Gordon became the Treasurer of Wyoming in 2012. The state treasurer manages the state's money. Governor Matt Mead chose him for this role. He was sworn in on November 1, 2012.
In 2014, Gordon was elected by voters to serve a full term as treasurer. He held this position until 2019.
Becoming Governor of Wyoming
2018 Governor Election
Instead of running for Congress again, Mark Gordon decided to run for governor of Wyoming in 2018. He won the Republican primary election on August 21. Then, he won the main election on November 6, defeating Democratic candidate Mary Throne.
Mark Gordon officially became governor on January 7, 2019.
2022 Governor Election
Governor Gordon ran for reelection in 2022. He won a second term as governor. He defeated Democratic candidate Theresa Livingston in the general election.
Governor Gordon's Time in Office
Mark Gordon began his first term as governor on January 7, 2019.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in November 2020, Gordon put some limits on public gatherings. He did not close businesses or immediately require masks statewide. Later that month, he and his wife, Jennie Gordon, both got COVID-19. In December 2020, Governor Gordon put a statewide mask rule in place. He lifted this rule on March 16, 2021.
In November 2020, Gordon suggested cutting $500 million from Wyoming's budget. This was because the state was earning less money from the fossil fuel industry, which is very important to Wyoming's economy. In April 2021, he signed a budget that cut $430 million. This was less than he first suggested because the state's money situation improved.
Governor Gordon has supported wind energy as a way for Wyoming to earn money. One example is the Chokecherry and Sierra Madre Wind Energy Project.
As of 2022, many polls showed that Mark Gordon was one of the most popular governors in the country.
On March 7, 2024, Governor Gordon banned Delta 8 hemp in Wyoming.
Personal Life
Mark Gordon met his first wife, Sarah Hildreth Gilmore, at Middlebury College. They got married in 1981. Sadly, she passed away in a car accident in 1993. They had two daughters together.
In 1998, Gordon met Jennie Muir Young. They got married in 2000. They own the Merlin Ranch, which is located east of Buffalo in Johnson County, Wyoming. In 2009, their ranch won an award for excellent land management.
On November 25, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mark Gordon tested positive for the virus. His office was temporarily closed for cleaning after his diagnosis.
