Governor's Time in Office
As governor, Mark Gordon has faced various challenges and made important decisions for Wyoming.
Handling Public Health
In late 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a rise in coronavirus cases. Governor Gordon put some rules in place for public gatherings. He and his wife, Jennie Gordon, also got COVID-19 that month. In December 2020, he made a statewide rule that people had to wear masks. This mask rule was lifted in March 2021.
State Budget and Economy
Wyoming's economy relies a lot on the fossil fuel industry, like coal mining. When revenue from this industry went down, Governor Gordon suggested cutting the state budget. In April 2021, he signed a budget that cut about $430 million. This was less than he first suggested because the state's financial outlook improved and Wyoming received extra money from a federal plan called the American Rescue Plan Act.
Energy and Environment
Governor Gordon supports a balanced approach to energy. He believes in using both traditional energy sources and new ones like wind power. He has supported projects like the Chokecherry and Sierra Madre Wind Energy Project. He talks about finding a "pragmatic transition" that helps Wyoming's economy while also looking at carbon capture technologies.
Recent Decisions
In March 2024, Governor Gordon signed a ban on Delta 8 hemp in Wyoming.
Personal Life
Mark Gordon met his first wife, Sarah Hildreth Gilmore, in college. They married in 1981 and had two daughters. Sadly, Sarah passed away in a car accident in 1993.
In 1998, Mark met Jennie Muir Young, and they married in 2000. They own the Merlin Ranch together in Johnson County, Wyoming. Their ranch even received an award for excellent rangeland stewardship in 2009.
