Mark of Toledo was a skilled physician, which means he was a doctor. He was also a canon, a type of priest, in the city of Toledo, Spain. He was active between the years 1193 and 1216.
His Important Translations
Mark of Toledo worked at the famous Toledo School of Translators. This school was a special place where scholars translated important books from Arabic into Latin. Latin was the main language for learning in Europe at that time.
One of his most important works was translating the Qur'an into Latin. The Qur'an is the holy book of Islam. This was one of the first times the Qur'an was translated into Latin.
He also translated important medical texts. These included a book by Hippocrates called De aere aquis et locis, which means "On Airs, Waters, and Places." Hippocrates was a very famous ancient Greek doctor. Mark also translated four medical books by Galen, another important ancient Greek doctor. These versions were originally translated into Arabic by Hunayn Ibn Ishaq.
