Marko Elsner (born April 11, 1960 – died May 18, 2020) was a professional football player from Slovenia. He played as a defender, which means his main job was to stop the other team from scoring goals. Marko was known for his strong defense and played for several important clubs during his career. He also represented both Yugoslavia and Slovenia in international matches.

Playing for Clubs
Marko Elsner was born in Ljubljana, the capital city of what is now Slovenia. When he was young, he played for the youth team of FC Wacker Innsbruck in Austria. Later, he returned to Ljubljana and played for ND Slovan before joining Olimpija in 1977.
Playing for Red Star Belgrade
In 1983, Marko joined Red Star Belgrade, a very famous club in Yugoslavia. He played there for four seasons. During his time with Red Star, he became a key player and even joined the national team. He helped Red Star win one Yugoslav championship in the 1983–84 season and one Yugoslav Cup in 1985. These were big achievements for him and the club.
Moving to France and Austria
In 1987, Marko left Yugoslavia and moved to France. He signed with OGC Nice, a team in the French Ligue 1. He played for Nice until 1993. There was a short break in 1990–91 when he played for Admira Wacker in the Austrian Bundesliga before returning to Nice.

Yugoslavia National Team
From 1984 to 1988, Marko played 14 games for the Yugoslavia national team. He was part of the Yugoslav team that won a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This was a proud moment for him and his country.
Slovenia National Team
After Slovenia became an independent country, Marko had the chance to play for the Slovenia national team. He made his first appearance for Slovenia on November 18, 1992, against Cyprus. His last game was a friendly match against Estonia on April 7, 1993. These two games were his only appearances for Slovenia.
About His Family
Football was a big part of the Elsner family. Marko's father, Branko Elsner, was also a professional footballer and later became a coach. Marko's sons, Luka and Rok, also became professional footballers, following in their father's and grandfather's footsteps.
Marko Elsner passed away on May 18, 2020, at the age of 60, after an illness.
