Marques Batista de Abreu (born February 12, 1973), known simply as Marques, is a famous former Brazilian striker. A striker is a football player whose main job is to score goals. Marques was known for his amazing skills and for helping his teammates score too.
In 2003, when Marques played for Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan, he was one of the best at setting up goals. He had 10 assists in the J1 League, which means he helped his teammates score 10 times. Only one player had more assists than him that season. Marques also worked very well with another Brazilian player, Ueslei, who scored the most goals in the J1 League in 2003.
After his football career, Marques decided to get involved in politics. He retired from playing football in 2010 and ran for a political position with the Brazilian Labour Party.

Playing in Brazil
Marques started his professional career at Corinthians in 1993. He played there for a few years before moving to Flamengo in 1996.
He then joined Atlético Mineiro in 1997. This was a very important club for him. He played there for many years, from 1997 to 2002, and then returned to the club later in his career. He also played for Vasco da Gama for a short time in 2003.
Playing in Japan
Marques also played football in Japan. From 2003 to 2005, he played for Nagoya Grampus Eight. He then moved to Yokohama F. Marinos and played there from 2006 to 2007. After his time in Japan, he returned to Brazil.
Returning to Atlético Mineiro
Marques came back to Atlético Mineiro in 2008. He played his final years of professional football with this club, retiring in 2010.
Marques's International Career
Marques also had the honor of playing for the Brazilian national team. He played for his country from 1994 to 2002. During this time, he played in 13 matches and scored 4 goals for Brazil. He was part of the team during the qualification games for the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification. Brazil successfully qualified for the World Cup that year.
