Their Traditional Land
The Maringar people traditionally lived in an area of about 500 square miles (1,300 km2) (about 1,300 square kilometers). This land was located along the Moyle River and included nearby swamps and smaller rivers. This estimate of their country was made by a researcher named Norman Tindale.
How They Lived
The Maringar society was made up of six different groups, known as clans. A clan is like a large family group that shares a common ancestor and traditions.
In 1950, a Norwegian researcher named Johannes Falkenberg studied the Maringar people. He spent time with them and wrote an important book about their society and customs. This book helped many people learn about the Maringar way of life.
