The Marriott Syracuse Downtown is a famous hotel in Syracuse, New York. It is located at 100 E. Onondaga Street. The hotel was first built in 1924 and was known as the Hotel Syracuse. After a big restoration in 2016, it joined the Marriott hotel family.

Hotel Design and Style

The hotel is special because it is a great example of an early 20th-century modern hotel. It was designed by William B. Post in 1921. His company, George B. Post & Sons, was a top hotel design firm at the time. The building shows off a style called Renaissance architecture.

Hotel History

Work on the hotel building began in 1922. The Hotel Syracuse first opened its doors on August 16, 1924. One of its very first guests was the famous child actor Jackie Coogan. The official opening party happened a month later, on September 18, 1924. This event was a dinner for the hotel's owners.

In 1927, the famous pilot Charles Lindbergh visited the hotel. He spoke about his amazing flight across the Atlantic Ocean. He flew from New York to Paris in his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis.

In 1980, the hotel changed its name to the Hilton at Syracuse Square. It also got bigger with a new part called the Imperial Ballroom. A new tower wing was added too. Later, in the 1990s, the hotel left the Hilton chain. It went back to its original name, Hotel Syracuse. This very large hotel, with 790 rooms, faced money problems. It eventually closed down in 2004.

Years of Closure

After closing, the city worked to solve the hotel's money issues. In 2005, a company from Israel, GMUL, agreed to buy the hotel. They planned to fix it up and turn it into a new four-star hotel. Their plans included 54 condos and 155 hotel rooms. They also wanted to restore the banquet halls and shops.

In 2006, another Israeli company, AMERIS Holdings Ltd, bought the hotel. They changed some of the plans. They decided to put condos in the historic part of the building. AMERIS Holdings Ltd reopened the banquet facilities, which had been closed for years. The hotel's parking garage was also fully renovated. In 2007, the hotel hosted big events, like the Syracuse Film Festival. Work also started on turning the 1980 tower into apartments. In 2008, the Hotel Syracuse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a historically important building.

However, AMERIS went bankrupt later in 2008. Work on the apartment tower stopped. This tower, called Symphony Tower, was later sold in 2012. It remained empty for some time.

Restoration Project

On April 14, 2013, a company called Pyramid Hotel Group offered to buy and fix up the Hotel Syracuse. Ed Riley, a leader at Pyramid Hotel Group, said the hotel would have 260-280 rooms. He thought the renovation would take about 14 to 16 months. It would cost over $60 million.

Riley explained that the hotel's rooms were too small and old. They needed to be made bigger and have new bathrooms. The large lobby and ballrooms were in good shape. They would be updated but kept their historic look. City officials wanted a hotel near the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center. The Hotel Syracuse is only a block and a half away. A renovated hotel could be perfect for convention guests.

In 2014, Ed Riley bought the Hotel Syracuse. In 2015, he started a $57 million project to restore it. This project gave the hotel 261 new guest rooms. It also brought back the beauty of all the main historic spaces. On June 25, 2015, while work was still happening, the hotel was renamed Marriott Syracuse Downtown. The main entrance was also moved to 100 E. Onondaga Street. The hotel officially reopened on August 19, 2016.
