The Marschall der DDR (pronounced Mar-shall der Dee-Dee-Are) was planned to be the highest military rank in East Germany. East Germany was also known as the German Democratic Republic (DDR). This special rank was created on March 25, 1982.

Why Was This Rank Created?

The Marschall der DDR rank was made because of changes happening in the Warsaw Pact. The Warsaw Pact was a group of countries in Eastern Europe that worked together for defense. They were led by the Soviet Union. These countries decided they needed a new plan for how their armies would work together.

Part of this new plan meant that each country needed a very clear leader for its military. This leader would be in charge of all the armed forces. The Marschall der DDR rank was supposed to be for this top commander in East Germany. It would make sure there was only one person at the very top of the military command.

A Rank That Was Never Used

Even though the rank was created, no one was ever given the title of Marschall der DDR. It was planned, but it was never actually used. The rank was officially removed in 1989. This happened just before East Germany and West Germany became one country again.
