History of Marshall Creek

People started moving to the Marshall Creek area in the late 1960s. They were looking for affordable land and a country lifestyle.

Becoming an Official Town

Marshall Creek did not have its own formal government until 1983. The residents decided to make it an official town. This was done to prevent nearby cities from taking over the area. If a larger city had taken over, it could have meant higher taxes and more rules for the residents.

The town was named after a nearby park. This park was managed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Marshall Creek was originally designed to be a place where people could buy land for manufactured (or 'mobile') homes at a good price.

Joining with Roanoke

In 2007, Marshall Creek voters made an important decision. They were asked if they wanted their town to join with the nearby town of Roanoke.

The Vote to Consolidate

On May 12, 2007, Marshall Creek residents voted on this idea. Most of them approved it, with 72 votes for joining and only 18 against.

Later, on November 6, 2007, Roanoke voters also had their say. They voted to welcome Marshall Creek into their town. A large majority, 83% of Roanoke voters, agreed to the consolidation. The official process was completed on November 19, 2007. After this date, Marshall Creek officially became part of Roanoke.
