Arthur Marshall Stoneham (1940–2011) was a very important British scientist. He was known as Marshall Stoneham. He was a physicist, which means he studied how matter and energy work. He worked for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and later became a professor at University College London. He was also a FRS, which is a big honour for scientists.

About Marshall Stoneham

Marshall Stoneham was born in Barrow-in-Furness, England, on May 18, 1940. His father was a doctor. Marshall went to Barrow Grammar School for Boys. After school, he studied physics at the University of Bristol. He earned his first degree in 1961 and his PhD in 1964. His PhD supervisor was a famous scientist named Maurice Pryce.

His Work in Physics

In 1964, Marshall Stoneham started working at AERE Harwell. This was a major research center for atomic energy. He worked there for over 30 years. He was promoted many times and became a chief scientist.

In the 1990s, he moved to UCL. There, he became a Professor of Physics in 1995. He also became the Director of the Centre for Materials Research. He joined a group that studied how materials behave. This group later helped create the London Centre for Nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is about working with tiny materials, even smaller than a speck of dust!

His Family and Hobbies

Marshall Stoneham married Doreen Montgomery in 1962. They had two daughters, Elise and Nicky. He passed away on February 18, 2011, in Oxford.

Marshall loved music very much. He played the French horn as a hobby for over 40 years. He even played a very difficult solo piece in a concert! People who worked with him remembered him as a kind, smart, and enthusiastic person.

His wife, Doreen, and his daughters, Elise and Nicky, now run a company called Oxford Authentication. Marshall and Doreen started this company together.

Awards and Honours

Marshall Stoneham received many important awards and honours for his work:

  • He became a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
  • He became a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
  • He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1989.
  • He gave the Royal Society’s Zeneca prize lecture in 1995.
  • He was made an Honorary Fellow of UCL.
  • He received the Guthrie Medal and Prize from the Institute of Physics in 2006.
  • He was the President of the Institute of Physics in 2010.
