Becoming a Bishop
In 1630, during the time of Pope Urban VIII, Martín de León Cárdenas was chosen to be the Bishop of Trivento. A few days later, on May 20, 1630, he officially became a bishop. This ceremony was led by Laudivio Zacchia, who was a very important cardinal.
The next year, in 1631, Pope Urban VIII appointed him again. This time, he became the Bishop of Pozzuoli. He stayed in this role for many years.

Later, in 1650, Pope Innocent X chose him for an even bigger role. Martín de León Cárdenas became the Archbishop of Palermo. Palermo is a large city in Italy. He continued to serve as the Archbishop of Palermo until he died on November 15, 1655, at the age of 70.
His Secret Novel
Between 1608 and 1615, Cárdenas wrote a special kind of novel called a picaresque novel. It was titled The Orphan's Story. This book was about a young boy's adventures as he traveled through the Spanish Empire. The story took readers to places like Lima, Potosi, Puerto Rico, and Cadiz.
The novel also included exciting parts about Sir Francis Drake's attack on Puerto Rico and the city of Cádiz being taken over. The section about Puerto Rico even had a letter from one of the generals who fought against Drake there. Cárdenas wanted to publish his book in 1621 using a different name, Andrés de León. However, the book was never published during his lifetime. The original handwritten story was only found again in 1965, many years after he passed away.
