Marta Harnecker (born in 1937, died on June 15, 2019) was an important writer, thinker, and activist from Chile. She studied how societies work (sociology) and how governments and politics work (political science). She also worked as a journalist.

She wrote more than 80 books during her life. Some of her well-known books include Conceptos Elementales del Materialismo Histórico (1969) and A World to Build (2015).

Early Life and Exile

Marta Harnecker was born in 1937. Her family had roots in Austria. In 1960, she visited Cuba, an island nation in the Caribbean. There, she met and married Manuel Piñeiro, a famous Cuban revolutionary.

In 1973, a big change happened in Chile. The president, Salvador Allende, was removed from power in a sudden military takeover called a coup d'état. This was led by Augusto Pinochet. Because of this event, Marta Harnecker had to leave Chile and live in another country. This is called being in exile.

Later Life and Work

After some time, Marta Harnecker married an American economist named Michael A. Lebowitz. She continued to write and share her ideas about society and politics. She was known for her strong beliefs and her work as an activist.

Marta Harnecker passed away in Canada on June 15, 2019. She was 82 years old.
