Later, she learned about experimental art in England and the Netherlands. Since then, she has focused on making special artist books and other creative projects.

Martha Hellion's Early Life and Art

Martha Hellion was born on September 25, 1937, in Mexico City, Mexico. She grew up with a passion for art and design. Her early studies helped her understand how to create and display art.

Moving to England

In 1968, Martha moved from Mexico to England. She went with her fellow artist and husband at the time, Felipe Ehrenberg. They left Mexico after a sad event in Tlatelolco, Mexico City. This event involved the military and student protestors.

Founding Beau Geste Press

In England, Martha Hellion helped start the Beau Geste Press. This was a special publishing group linked to the Fluxus art movement. Fluxus was a group of artists in the 1970s who liked to experiment. Martha, Felipe Ehrenberg, David Mayor, Chris Welch, and Madeleine Gallard started the press on a farm in Devon.

Publishing Unique Art Books

The Beau Geste Press published a magazine called Schmuck. They printed eight issues between 1972 and 1978. Each issue had about 550 copies. They also published many artist books by Ehrenberg, Mayor, and other artists. Some of these artists included Carolee Schneemann and Ulises Carrión.

Connecting Artists Worldwide

The main goal of Schmuck and Beau Geste Press was to help artists from different countries connect. They made special issues of Schmuck about art from France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Czechoslovakia, and Iceland. Martha Hellion has continued to work with books and has taken part in workshops about artist books. She also edited a book called Ulises Carrión: Libros de artista in 2003.

Center for Artist Publications

Martha Hellion founded the Center of Research and Documentation on Artists' Publications in Mexico City. This place helps to show, share, and spread information about artist publications. It's a great resource for anyone interested in unique books made by artists.
