Beau Geste Press: A Creative Adventure
Martha Hellion helped start the Beau Geste Press in England. This was a special art group linked to Fluxus, an art movement from the 1970s. It was a big part of the art scene around the world.
Moving to England
In 1968, Martha moved from Mexico to England. She went with artist Felipe Ehrenberg, who was her husband at the time. They left after a difficult event in Mexico City. This event involved government actions against student demonstrators in Tlatelolco.
Starting the Press
On a farm in Devon, England, they started Beau Geste Press. They worked with artist David Mayor, cartoonist Chris Welch, and Madeleine Gallard. This group published a magazine called Schmuck. They released eight issues between 1972 and 1978. Each issue had about 550 copies.
Publishing Artists' Books
The press also published many books by artists. These included works by Ehrenberg, Mayor, and others. Famous artists like Carolee Schneemann, Michael Nyman, and Ulises Carrión had their books published here. The main goal of Schmuck and Beau Geste Press was to connect artists internationally.
Global Art Connections
Schmuck magazine had special issues about art from different countries. These included France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Czechoslovakia, and Iceland. Martha Hellion continues to work with books and takes part in seminars. She helps research and understand artist books. She also edited a book about Ulises Carrión's artist books in 2003.
Center for Research and Documentation
Martha Hellion also founded the Center of Research and Documentation on Artists' Publications. This center is in Mexico City. It helps to show, share, and spread information about artist publications.
