Martha Lou Gadsden was born in Charleston, South Carolina. Her parents were Joseph and Lillie Mae Simmons. When she was only five years old, her father passed away.

To make sure her children were cared for, Martha Lou's mother sent Martha Lou and her two siblings to live with their grandparents. This was in Manning, South Carolina. Her mother stayed in Charleston to work. It was her grandmother who first taught Martha Lou how to cook delicious meals.
