Martin Bernheimer (born September 28, 1936 – died September 29, 2019) was an important American music critic. A music critic is someone who listens to and writes about music. He was the main classical music critic for the Los Angeles Times newspaper for over 30 years.

Early Life and Education

Martin Bernheimer was born in Munich, Germany. He later moved to the United States. He loved music and studied it at several universities. He went to Brown University and the Hochschule für Musik in Munich. He also studied with a musicologist named Gustave Reese at New York University. A musicologist is a person who studies music history and theory.

A Career in Music Criticism

Martin Bernheimer started his writing career in New York City. He wrote for the New York Herald Tribune. He also worked as an assistant for another critic at the Saturday Review. Later, he became a music critic for the New York Post.

In 1965, he moved to Los Angeles. There, he became the main music and dance critic for the Los Angeles Times. He worked at this newspaper for three decades. During this time, he became very well-known.

Awards and Achievements

Martin Bernheimer received several important awards for his writing. He won the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award twice. He won it in 1974 and again in 1978. This award celebrates excellent writing about music.

In 1982, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. The Pulitzer Prize is one of the highest honors for writers in the United States. He won it for his thoughtful and clear reviews of classical music.

Later Years

After 1996, Martin Bernheimer continued to write. His articles mostly appeared in Opera magazine. He also wrote for the Financial Times. He often gave talks about music. He also provided comments for opera shows on TV or radio. He retired in 2017.

Martin Bernheimer passed away on September 29, 2019. He died one day after his 83rd birthday.
