Martin Compston is a Scottish actor and a former professional football player. He is best known for playing Detective Inspector Steve Arnott in the BBC drama Line of Duty. He also played Liam in Ken Loach's movie Sweet Sixteen and Ewan Brodie in the TV series Monarch of the Glen.
Early Life and School
Martin Compston grew up in Greenock, Scotland. He is the younger of two brothers. He went to St Columba's High School in a nearby town called Gourock.
Football Career
Before becoming an actor, Martin was a talented football player. As a teenager, he played for the youth team of Aberdeen. After finishing school, he joined his local professional team, Greenock Morton.
He played two games for Greenock Morton's main team in the 2001–02 season. In both games, he came on as a substitute. After leaving Morton, he played for a short time in a junior league for Greenock Juniors.
Acting Career
Martin Compston had never acted before when he tried out for a main role in Ken Loach's film Sweet Sixteen. The movie was being filmed close to where he lived. The film was very successful at the Cannes Film Festival, which made him famous in Scotland right away. Martin and his co-star, William Ruane, were both nominated for an award called "Most Promising Newcomer" at the British Independent Film Awards. Martin won the award.
He then got a regular role in the BBC TV show Monarch of the Glen. After that, he appeared in several movies. These included A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, which won awards at the Sundance Festival. He also starred in Red Road, which won an award at Cannes. For his role in Red Road, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Scottish BAFTAs. He also appeared in True North.
In 2010, Martin starred in the film Soulboy. He also appeared in music videos for the band The View.
In 2012, Martin Compston took on the lead role of Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott in the BBC police drama Line of Duty. His character was a detective in a special anti-corruption police unit. He worked alongside Craig Parkinson again in this series. In the same year, he also starred in the film Piggy. He then played the main character in The Wee Man, a film about the life of a Glasgow figure named Paul Ferris.
In 2013, Martin starred in the ITV miniseries The Ice Cream Girls. He also played Roy James in The Great Train Robbery.
From 2014 to 2021, Martin continued to play Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott in five more series of Line of Duty. The show became very popular and moved from BBC Two to BBC One.
In 2016, he starred in the Scottish TV series In Plain Sight. In 2020, he starred with Sophie Rundle in the TV series The Nest.
In 2021, Martin was chosen to play Fulmer Hamilton in the Amazon Prime Video thriller The Rig, which came out in January 2023. In March 2022, he starred in Our House, a drama series based on a novel.
Personal Life
Martin Compston married American actress Tianna Chanel Flynn in 2016. They have one son.
He supports Scottish independence, which is the idea of Scotland becoming an independent country.
