About Marty
Marty Jackson is a skilled Arborist, which means he takes care of trees. He looks up to Jackie Christiansen, a famous shot put thrower from Denmark. To stay strong for his sports, Marty trains at different places in Geelong, Australia.
Gridiron Days
Before becoming a Paralympic athlete, Marty played Gridiron for the Geelong Buccaneers club. He was chosen to represent Victoria in 2010 and 2012. Marty was even inducted into the Geelong Buccaneers' 'Ring of Champions'. This was to recognize his tough and determined style of play. He was also the first person to receive a Life Membership from the Geelong Buccaneers.
While playing gridiron, Marty got an injury during a tackle. This caused a knee dislocation. It led to a condition that affected his balance and caused partial weakness in his lower left leg.
Athletics Career
Marty started competing in Track and field athletics in 2014. He focused on throwing events like discus, shot put, and javelin.
2016 Highlights
In 2016, Marty represented Australia at the Oceania Melanesian Regional Athletics Championships in Fiji. He was named the team captain for the Australian Athletics team at this event. Marty won a gold medal in the Ambulant Shot Put.
Later that year, the Geelong Advertiser newspaper announced that Marty had won the Barwon Sports Academy Lee Troop Award for 2016.
2017 Competitions
On June 8, 2017, it was announced that Marty Jackson was chosen to represent Australia. He would compete at the World Para-Athletics Championships in London.
Marty competed in the F38 classified Shot Put event. He finished in 4th place with a throw of 13.31 meters. Marty was one of three Para Athletes from Geelong selected for these Championships.
On October 7, 2017, Marty improved his personal best throw. He increased it from 13.47m to 13.49m during a competition in Geelong.
2018 Commonwealth Games
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Queensland, Marty won a silver medal. He competed in the Men's F38 Shot Put event. His throw was 13.74m.
2019 World Championships
At the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai, Marty won a bronze medal. He competed in the Men's Shot Put F38. He achieved a new personal best throw of 15.14m at this event.
Marty is coached by John Eden, a former Paralympian from New Zealand. Marty competes for the Athletics Chilwell club.
2021 National Title
At the Athletics Australia Athletics Championships in 2021, Marty won the National Title. He earned a gold medal with a new personal best throw of 15.46m.
Para Ice Hockey
Marty Jackson was chosen to play for the first-ever Australian men's para ice hockey team. They competed at the 2018 World Para Ice Hockey Championships in Finland.
He was named the Alternate Captain for the 2018 Australian IceRoos team. This team went on to win the bronze medal in the C-pool event.
