History of Cadiz

The first European settlers in the Cadiz area came from lead mining regions further west in Wisconsin. These miners were looking for new places to live and work.

The very first settler in Cadiz was George Lot. He came from Pennsylvania and settled in 1834. He had been a miner before the Black Hawk War, a conflict between Native Americans and the United States. After a short time, George Lot moved to Winslow, Illinois.

Soon after, other former miners arrived. These included William Boyles from Indiana and Stephen G. Hale, Nicholas Hale, and Bennett Nolan from Illinois. William Boyles later helped name Green County.

In 1843, Abner Van Sant and his son-in-law, John Deniston, built a sawmill in the area. A few years later, they planned out the community. The town of Cadiz was named after a city in Spain.
