Maruia is a small place located in the West Coast region of New Zealand. A main road called the Shenandoah Highway (also known as State Highway 65) goes right through it. Maruia is about 65 kilometers north of Murchison. The Lewis Pass is about 39 kilometers to the south-east. Reefton is about 63 kilometers west by road. The Maruia River flows nearby, to the west of the area.

What People Do in Maruia
The main activity in Maruia is dairy farming. This means people raise cows to produce milk. The community celebrated 100 years of people living in the Maruia Valley in 2005.
The Maruia Valley also inspired some important groups. The Maruia Society was an environmental group. It later changed its name to the Ecologic Foundation. There was also a company called the New Zealand Nature Company. They organized something called the Maruia Mail Order Catalogue.
Education
Maruia School is a primary school for students in years 1 to 8. It teaches both boys and girls. The school first opened in 1926. As of February 2024, there are 18 students attending Maruia School.
