Mary, Mungo and Midge was a fun British animated TV show for children. It was created by John Ryan and first shown by the BBC in 1969. The show followed the exciting adventures of a girl named Mary, her dog Mungo, and her tiny pet mouse Midge.

Discovering Mary, Mungo and Midge

This special show was one of the first children's programs in the UK to feature life in a busy city. Unlike many other shows that took place in forests or the countryside, Mary, Mungo and Midge lived in a tall tower block in a lively town. The animals in the show, a dog and a mouse, were also familiar pets for people living in cities.

Meet the Characters

The main characters were Mary, a curious girl, her loyal dog Mungo, and Midge, a clever little mouse. They lived with Mary's parents in their flat high up in the tower block. The show was narrated by Richard Baker, a well-known BBC newsreader. Mary's voice was done by Isabel Ryan, who was the daughter of the show's creator, John Ryan. The catchy music for the series was composed by Johnny Pearson.

Adventures in the City

In each episode, Mary, Mungo, and Midge would start their adventures by taking the lift down from their flat. They would explore different parts of the busy town. After their adventures, they would return home. Midge, being very smart, would stand on Mungo's nose to reach the lift button and send them back up to their floor! One time, the family even went for a picnic in the countryside in an episode called 'The Garage'.

The Creators Behind the Show

Mary, Mungo and Midge was made by John Ryan Studios. This studio also created other popular animated series. These included the earlier Captain Pugwash and the later The Adventures of Sir Prancelot. All these shows shared a similar and unique drawing style. If you enjoyed the show, you might be interested to know that The Complete Mary, Mungo and Midge was released on DVD on 5 April 2004.
