Mary Alment (born April 9, 1834 – died April 11, 1908) was an important Irish artist. She was known for painting beautiful landscapes and detailed portraits. Mary Alment showed her artwork in many exhibitions throughout her life.
Life of Mary Alment
Mary Martha Alment was born in Derry, Ireland, on April 9, 1834. Her father was William F. Alment. Her grandfather, John Alment, was a skilled maker of scientific tools.
Mary studied art at the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) School of Design. There, she was taught by a famous artist named Henry MacManus.
For many years, Mary lived in Blackrock, Dublin. She shared her home with her niece, Elizabeth Alment, who was also an artist. Both Mary and Elizabeth taught art in Dublin. Mary Alment passed away at home on April 11, 1908.
Mary Alment's Artistic Style
Mary Alment mostly used watercolours for her paintings. She created many lovely landscapes and detailed portraits. Her landscapes often showed places around Dublin and north Wicklow, especially near the River Dodder.
She also painted scenes from north Wales. Mary visited Wales regularly starting in 1873. She had art studios in Dublin, at 29 and 54 Dawson Street.
Exhibitions and Shows
Mary Alment showed her art at the Royal Hibernian Academy for many years, from 1858 to 1908. She also displayed her work with other groups, like the Watercolour Society of Ireland and the Dublin Sketching Club.
Her paintings were part of the RDS Art Exhibition in 1858. She also showed her art at the Exhibition of Fine and Ornamental Art in Dublin in 1861. In 1885, her work was seen at the Irish Artisans' Exhibition in Dublin. Three of her landscapes were even shown at the Irish Exhibition in London in 1888.
