Mary Gould Davis was born on February 13, 1882, in a town called Bangor, Maine. When she was younger, her family moved to Middlesboro, Kentucky. Later, in 1896, they settled down in New York City.

Mary Gould Davis's Career as a Librarian and Author

Mary Gould Davis started her career as an assistant librarian in 1905. She worked at the Brooklyn Public Library. In 1913, she moved to the New York Public Library, still as an assistant librarian.

In 1922, Mary Gould Davis got a big promotion. She became the supervisor of storytelling! She held this fun job until she retired on New Year's Eve in 1944.

Writing and Editing Books

While she was a storytelling supervisor and even after she retired, Mary Gould Davis wrote many books. Most of her books were collections of stories for kids.

Her first book, A Baker's Dozen: Thirteen Stories to Tell and to Read Aloud, came out in 1930. One of her most famous books was Truce of the Wolf and Other Tales of Old Italy. It was published in 1931. This book was so good that it received a Newbery Honor in 1932.

Mary Gould Davis kept writing and editing books for many years. Her last work was The Girl's Book of Verse: A Treasury of Old and New Poems, which was published in 1952.
