"Mary Had a Little Lamb" is a fun song by the British-American rock band Wings. It was released as a single in March 1972. The song was written by Paul and Linda McCartney. It is based on the very old and well-known nursery rhyme with the same name.

The Story Behind the Song

Some people thought Paul McCartney wrote this song because his earlier song, "Give Ireland Back to the Irish", was not allowed to be played on the BBC. This was because the BBC did not play songs that were political.

However, Paul McCartney has said this is not true. He explained that he really wanted to write a song especially for children. In fact, he wrote "Mary Had a Little Lamb" even before the political song. You can hear an early version of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" from an interview recorded in December 1971. This shows he had the idea for the children's song first.
