Mary Anna Hamilton, Duchess of Abercorn (born Lady Mary Curzon-Howe; 23 July 1848 – 10 May 1929) was an important English lady. She was part of the nobility, which means her family had a high social rank. Her father was Richard Curzon-Howe, 1st Earl Howe, and her mother was Anne Gore.
Her Life and Royal Connections
Mary Anna Hamilton had a special role in the royal family. She was a Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Alexandra. A Lady-in-Waiting is a lady who helps a queen or princess with her daily tasks and attends events with her. It was a very important job.
Marriage and Family Life
On 7 January 1869, Mary Anna married James Hamilton. He was the eldest son of the first Duke of Abercorn. They got married in London, England. When she married James, she became the Duchess of Abercorn. A Duke is a very high-ranking nobleman, and his wife is called a Duchess.
Mary Anna and James had nine children together. Some of their children sadly passed away very young. However, others grew up and had interesting lives:
- James Albert Edward Hamilton (1869–1953) became the 3rd Duke of Abercorn.
- Lady Alexandra Phyllis Hamilton (1876–1918) had The Princess of Wales as a sponsor at her baptism. This means the Princess was a special guest at her christening. Lady Alexandra was lost at sea when the ship she was on, RMS Leinster, sank.
- Lady Gladys Mary Hamilton (1880–1917) married Ralph Francis Forward-Howard, 7th Earl of Wicklow. They had one son.
- Lord Arthur John Hamilton (1883–1914) was a Captain in the Irish Guards. He worked for the royal household and was killed in action during the First Battle of Ypres in World War I.
- Lord Claud Nigel Hamilton (1889–1975) was also a Captain in the Grenadier Guards. He fought in World War I and later served in the royal household of King George V and Queen Elizabeth II. He held several important roles, helping the King and Queen with their duties.
