Mary Josephine Nash Baldwin (born 1947) is an Irish historian who lives in Catalonia, Spain. She is an expert in the history of women and feminism in Spain. Feminism is about believing that women and men should have equal rights and opportunities.
Biography
Mary Nash finished her studies at the National University of Ireland in 1967. Later, in 1975, she earned a degree in philosophy and letters from the University of Barcelona. She continued her studies there and received her doctorate in modern history in 1977. Her main research was about women in political groups in Spain between 1931 and 1939.
In 1982, Mary Nash helped start the Women's Historical Research Center at the University of Barcelona. This center focuses on studying the history of women.
She won the Emilia Pardo Bazán prize in 1984 for her work called Presencia y protagonismo. Aspectos de la historia de las mujeres. This book looked at the presence and importance of women throughout history.
In 1995, she received the Creu de Sant Jordi award from the government of Catalonia. This is a very important award given to people who have done great things for Catalonia. In 2008, she received the President Macià Working Medal.
In 2010, the University of Granada gave her the title of Doctor Honoris Causa. This is a special honor given to someone who has achieved a lot, even if they didn't study at that university.
Mary Nash helps lead a journal called Arenal, Journal of Women's HistoryUNESCO, an organization that promotes peace and understanding through education and culture. From 1991 to 1997, she was the president of the Spanish Association for Women's History Research.
