Mary Poppins is a popular stage musical. It features music and lyrics by the famous Sherman Brothers, Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Other songs were added by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The story, or script, was written by Julian Fellowes.
This musical brings together ideas from two well-known sources. It is based on the Mary Poppins children's books by P. L. Travers. It also uses parts of the 1964 Disney movie. The show combines elements from both, including many of the beloved songs from the film.

Bringing the Show to Life
The musical was produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Disney Theatrical Productions. Richard Eyre directed the show, with Matthew Bourne as co-director. Matthew Bourne also worked with Stephen Mear on the choreography, which means they created all the dances.
First Performances and Awards
The very first production of Mary Poppins opened in London's West End in December 2004. This show was a big success! It won two important Olivier Awards. These awards are like the top honors for theatre in the UK. The musical won for Best Actress and for Best Theatre Choreography.
A similar production then opened on Broadway in New York City in November 2006. It had almost the same creative team. This Broadway show was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It won the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design in a Musical. This means the stage sets were considered the best.
The original Broadway show ran for a long time, closing in March 2013. It had 2,619 performances! After these successful runs, the musical went on tour in many places. It has also been performed in many countries around the world.

Mary Poppins has become a very popular choice for schools and community theatres. Many young actors and local groups enjoy putting on this magical show.
