Mary J. Ruwart (born October 16, 1949) is an American scientist, writer, and activist. She is known for her work as a libertarian speaker and author. She was a top candidate for the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination in 2008. She also wrote a book called Healing Our World.

Early Life and Education
Mary Ruwart was born in Detroit, Michigan. She studied science at Michigan State University. In 1970, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. This field looks at the chemical processes happening in living things. In 1974, she received her doctorate in biophysics, which uses physics to study biological systems.
After college, Dr. Ruwart worked as a professor at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Later, she spent 19 years as a scientist for a company called Upjohn Pharmaceuticals. There, she researched and helped develop new medicines. She has also written a lot about how the government makes rules for the medicine industry.
Working for Libertarian Ideas
Mary Ruwart is a member of the Libertarian Party. This political party believes in individual freedom and limited government. She has tried to become the party's candidate for president and vice-president in the past.
In 2000, she ran for the U.S. Senate in Texas. She received over 72,000 votes. Dr. Ruwart has also been part of the Libertarian National Committee, which helps lead the party. She was a main speaker at the Libertarian National Convention in 2004.
She has also served on the boards of several groups that support individual liberty and justice. These include the International Society for Individual Liberty and the Fully Informed Jury Association.
Running for President in 2008
In March 2008, Mary Ruwart announced she would try to become the Libertarian Party's candidate for president. She wanted to end military actions in other countries and stop sending foreign aid. She also supported free trade and wanted to cut government spending to create jobs.
She competed against other candidates at the 2008 Libertarian National Convention on May 25, 2008. Even though she did well in some rounds of voting, she did not win the nomination. Another candidate, Bob Barr, became the party's choice for president.
