Mary Stolz (born Mary Slattery, March 24, 1920 – December 15, 2006) was an American writer. She wrote many popular books for children and young adults. Her stories often explored the feelings and challenges of growing up.

Mary Stolz received important awards for her writing. She earned Newbery Honors in 1962 and 1966. In 1982, she was recognized for all her amazing books with the George G. Stone Recognition of Merit. Besides books, she also wrote for magazines like Cosmopolitan and Seventeen.

Her Early Life

Mary Slattery was born on March 24, 1920. Her birthplace was Boston, Massachusetts. She grew up in Manhattan, New York. Mary went to the Birch Wathen School. There, she helped edit her school's magazine, Birch Leaves. She also studied at Columbia University and the Katherine Gibbs School.

Family and Starting to Write

When Mary was 18, she got married. She had one son named Bill. Later, she faced some health issues that kept her at home. To pass the time, she started writing stories. This is how she wrote her first novel, To Tell Your Love (1950). She wrote it all on yellow legal pads! Mary divorced in 1956. Later, in 1965, she married Dr. Thomas C. Jaleski.

Her Writing Career

Mary Stolz's first novel, To Tell Your Love, caught the eye of a famous children's book editor, Ursula Nordstrom. Mary greatly admired Ursula Nordstrom. She called her "a great editor" who read manuscripts "lovingly, but firmly." Mary trusted her judgment completely.

Mary Stolz worked with the Harper publishing company for most of her career. This company is now known as HarperCollins. While she wrote many books for young readers, she also wrote one book for adults. It was called Truth and Consequence.

Her Later Years

Mary Stolz passed away on December 15, 2006. She died in Longboat Key, Florida.
