Mary Stuart was born in 1718. She was the only daughter of Sir Edward Wortley Montagu and Lady Mary Pierrepont. Her mother was also the daughter of Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull.

Mary was born in Constantinople, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Her father was working there as an ambassador. An ambassador is a country's official representative in another country. Mary's mother wrote many letters about her time in Turkey. These letters are still famous today.

Marriage and Children

On August 24, 1736, Mary married John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. He later became the Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1762.

Mary and John had a large family. They had five sons and six daughters. Here are some of their children:

  • Lady Mary Stuart (born around 1741)
  • John Stuart, Lord Mount Stuart (born 1744), who became a politician
  • Lady Anne Stuart (born around 1745)
  • The Hon James Archibald Stuart (born 1747), a politician and writer

  • Lady Louisa Stuart (born 1757), a writer who never married

In 1761, Mary was given a special title. She became Baroness Mount Stuart. This title was given to her for her lifetime. It could also be passed down to her male children by her husband. The title was connected to Wortley in Yorkshire.

Mary Stuart, Countess of Bute, passed away on November 6, 1794. She died in Isleworth, Middlesex. Her oldest son, John, inherited her special title.

How People Saw Her

Many people thought highly of Lady Bute. They saw her as a smart and kind person.

In 1774, a woman named Mary Delany wrote about her. She said that Lady Bute was "agreeable," which means pleasant. She also said Lady Bute had "good sense" and "good principles." This means she was wise and had strong morals.

Karl Wolfgang Schweizer, a writer for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, also praised her. He wrote that Lady Bute seemed to be a woman who was careful, loyal, and graceful. She was very dedicated to her husband and her family.
