Early Life and Learning
Mary Wynne Davies was born in Carmarthen, Wales. Her parents were Sydney and Esther Davies. She grew up in Llandovery, where her father worked as a school teacher. Mary went to Howell's Boarding School in Denbigh for her education.
She won a special scholarship to study at Somerville College, Oxford. This meant she got financial help to attend the university. There, she focused on topology, a branch of mathematics. She studied with a famous mathematician named Henry Whitehead. In 1953, she earned her first degree. Later, she earned her doctorate degree in 1966. She got this advanced degree from the University of Warsaw in Poland. Her special project for this degree was about "The Homology of Cartesian Product Spaces."
Her Career Journey
Mary Wynne Warner's career as a mathematician was quite unique. It was shaped by her husband's job as a diplomat. Diplomats are people who represent their country in other nations. Because of his work, she lived in many different countries.
She did important research in Beijing, China, where her husband was working. In Rangoon, Myanmar, she taught advanced mathematics to students. During the 1970s, she also taught at two universities in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. When she was in England for longer periods, she taught at the City University London. She became a full professor there in 1996, which is a very high teaching position.
Personal Life
Mary Wynne Davies married Sir Gerald Warner in 1956. He was a diplomat and also worked in intelligence. They had three children together. Their names were Sian (born 1958), Jonathan (born 1959), and Rachel (born 1961). Interestingly, each of their children was born in a different country.
Mary Wynne Warner passed away in 1998 in Spain. She was 65 years old. She was buried in the churchyard at Kemerton. Two of her children were already buried there.
