Marya Zaturenska (born September 12, 1902 – died January 19, 1982) was an American poet. She was known for her beautiful lyric poetry. In 1938, she won the famous Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, which is a very important award for writers.

Her Life Story

Marya was born in Kiev, which is in Ukraine. When she was eight years old, her family moved to the United States. They settled in New York City.

Like many immigrant families, Marya worked in a clothing factory during the day. But she was also a very dedicated student. She went to high school at night to continue her education.

Marya was an excellent student. She earned a scholarship to attend Valparaiso University. Later, she moved to the University of Wisconsin–Madison. There, she studied library science, which is about how libraries are organized and managed.

At the university, she met Horace Gregory, who was also a prize-winning poet. They got married in 1925. Marya and Horace had two children, named Patrick and Joanna.

Marya Zaturenska wrote eight books of poetry. Her book Cold Morning Sky won the Pulitzer Prize. She also helped put together six collections of other poets' works. Her poems were published in famous places like The New York Times and Poetry Magazine.
