Horace Gregory (born April 10, 1898, died March 11, 1982) was an American poet who won many awards. He also translated old poems and wrote about books. He taught at a college too. In 1965, he won a big award called the Bollingen Prize.

Life of Horace Gregory

Horace Gregory went to the University of Wisconsin and finished in 1923. He wrote eight books of his own poems. He also translated poems from ancient Roman poets like Catullus and Ovid. He wrote life stories (biographies) about artists like Whistler and poet Amy Lowell.

In 1925, he married Marya Zaturenska, who was also a poet and editor. She won a Pulitzer Prize for her poetry in 1938. They had two children, Patrick and Joanna.

His collected writings, called Spirit of Time and Place, came out in 1973. He wrote reviews of books for The New York Times. His poems and writings were also in magazines like The New Yorker and Poetry Magazine.

People described Gregory's poetry as "literary." It showed that he understood the lives of everyday working people. Poet Richard Eberhart said that Gregory's poems were "lyrical and straight-forward."

Gregory taught English at Sarah Lawrence College for 26 years. He was a professor there from 1934 to 1960. One of his students was Myra Cohn Livingston, who later became a children's poet.

Later in his life, Horace Gregory and his wife lived in Palisades, New York. His writings and papers are kept at Syracuse University.
