How the Trust Started
The Maryland Historical Trust began in May 1961. It was set up to accept gifts of property. Its goal was to help and encourage efforts to save historic places across Maryland.
Becoming the State's Preservation Office
In 1966, a big law was passed called the National Historic Preservation Act. This law created the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historic sites across the United States.
Because of this new law, in 1967, Governor Spiro Agnew chose the Trust's leader to be the State Liaison Officer. This made the Maryland Historical Trust the official state office for historic preservation.
What the Trust Does Today
The agency helps find and study old sites through archeological surveys. Archeology is the study of human history through digging up old things.
In 1974, the Maryland Legislature created the Maryland Historic Sites Inventory. This is a list of all the important historic places in Maryland. This list helps the Trust keep track of and protect these sites.
Awards and Recognition
The leaders of the Maryland Historical Trust give out special awards each year. These are called the Maryland Preservation Awards. They honor people and groups who do a great job protecting Maryland's history.
