María Lorenza Barreneche Iriarte (born July 3, 1926 – died January 5, 2016) was an important public figure in Argentina. She was married to Raúl Alfonsín, who became the President of Argentina. María Lorenza served as the First Lady of Argentina from 1983 to 1989.

Her Early Life

María Lorenza was born in 1926 in Chascomús, a city in the Buenos Aires Province of Argentina. Her parents were Felipe Barreneche Echaide and María Lorenza Iriarte Hospital. Her family had roots in the Basque region.

She met her future husband, Raúl Alfonsín, at a fun masquerade ball in the 1940s. Raúl was studying law at the time. They both grew up in Chascomús.

Family Life

María Lorenza and Raúl got married in 1949. They had six children together: Raúl Felipe, Ana María, Ricardo, Marcela, María Inés, and Javier Ignacio.

María Lorenza was not very interested in politics herself. She focused on raising her children while her husband pursued his political career.

As First Lady

When Raúl Alfonsín became President of Argentina in 1983, María Lorenza took on the role of First Lady. The First Lady often supports the President and takes part in social and charitable activities. She held this important position until 1989.

Later Years and Passing

Former President Raúl Alfonsín passed away on March 31, 2009. María Lorenza Barreneche Iriarte was not able to attend his state funeral. This was because she was also experiencing poor health at the time.

In her later life, María Lorenza faced health challenges. She had problems with her eyesight and found it harder to move around. She died in Buenos Aires on January 5, 2016, at the age of 89.

Her body was cremated at La Chacarita Cemetery. Later, her remains were buried in La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires. The President at the time, Mauricio Macri, sent his condolences to her family on Twitter.
