María Luisa Reid (born November 18, 1943) is a famous Mexican artist. She comes from a town called Zacatepec in the state of Morelos. She is also a member of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana, a special group for Mexican artists.

Becoming an Artist

María Luisa Reid studied many different types of art. From 1960 to 1963, she learned about decorating and interior design at IPAE. She then took classes in wood carving from 1964 to 1966.

Later, she studied painting from 1967 to 1969. She also learned about making Gobelins tapestry from 1972 to 1973. This is a special kind of woven art. She continued her painting studies from 1978 to 1982.

Studying Art in Paris

María Luisa Reid also traveled to Paris, France, to study art. From 1982 to 1986, she learned sculpture at a famous art school there. She earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in fine arts. She got these degrees from the University of Paris.

Her Unique Art Style

María Luisa Reid creates paintings and drawings. However, she is most famous for her sculptures. She signs her artworks "ML Reid."

She describes her art as "symbolic abstraction." This means her art uses shapes and colors to show ideas or feelings. It does not try to look exactly like real things.

Exhibitions and Shows

María Luisa Reid has shown her artwork in many places. She has had nine solo exhibitions. This means her art was the only art shown at these events.

She has also taken part in over one hundred group exhibitions. Her art has been shown in France, Spain, Japan, and Cuba. Some important shows include "300 Latino-americans dans l’espace" in Paris. Another was "Viva la vida Frida" in Havana.

Special Art Events

Her sculptures and paintings have been part of many special art events. She participated in the Joan Miró drawing prize in Barcelona. Her work was also shown at the first annual sculpture show in Mexico City. This was at the Museo de Arte Moderno.

She has also shown her art at the "Juguete Arte Objeto" event four times. This event is held at the José Luis Cuevas Museum. She has also joined the "Encuentros Nacionales e Internacionales del Colectivo de Mujeres en el Arte" six times.

Recognition and Family

María Luisa Reid became a member of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana in 1998. This group has honored her work several times. They recognized her art at their annual sculpture and art object shows.

She lives in Mexico City with her husband, Dr. Mario Olmos Soria. Her family calls her "Guicha."
