About Masayuki Ochiai
Masayuki Ochiai was born in 1958. He grew up in Setagaya, a part of western Tokyo, Japan. This area was special because many film studios were located there, such as Toho, Nikkatsu, and Daiei Film.
Early Life and Inspiration
When he was young, Ochiai loved watching fantasy TV shows. These included American shows like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. He also enjoyed Japanese shows like Ultra Q.
Ochiai says these shows made him feel very excited. Today, when he makes his own films or TV shows, he tries to create that same feeling. He hopes young people watching his work can feel the same joy he did.
His biggest inspiration to become a director was Charlie Chaplin. Ochiai saw Chaplin's movies City Lights and The Kid when he was in junior high school. These films made him want to direct.
Starting His Career
Ochiai went to Nihon University College of Art. At that time, he thought Japanese films were not doing very well. He believed it would be hard to work on feature films (full-length movies). So, he decided to become a television director instead.
In 1990, Ochiai made a short film called Midnight Call. It was part of a TV drama series called Yonimo Kimyou Na Monogatari. He also directed episodes for other TV series. These included Night Head for Fuji TV and the science fiction show Black Out.
Directing Movies
Ochiai directed the movie Parasite Eve. This film was based on a very popular novel in Japan. He later said he wasn't completely happy with how the movie turned out. The producers wanted it to be a love story, and he had to make some changes he didn't fully agree with. Because of this, he felt it couldn't be a true horror movie. Parasite Eve was released in Japan in 1997.
His next film was Saimin, which came out in 1999. It was known as The Hypnotist in the United States. The company that published the novel contacted him to direct the movie.
Later, Ochiai directed his first American movie, Shutter. This film, released in 2008, was a remake of a Thai movie from 2004.
