Mascarats is a rock and reggae music group from Catalonia, Spain. They are known for mixing rock and reggae sounds in their songs.

The group started in 2008. Their first name was "Amagau Todos." They formed in the city of La Sénia in Catalonia. Later, they changed their name to Mascarats.

The name "Mascarats" is a special nickname for people from La Sénia. Long ago, people in La Sénia worked in coal mines. Their faces would get black and dirty from the coal. Because of this, they were called "masked" people. This old name was starting to be forgotten. The band chose the name Mascarats to help keep this part of their town's history alive.

The Music of Mascarats

Mascarats has released several albums and songs. Their music often shares messages about important social topics.

First Albums and Popular Songs

Their first album was called "La veu del poble" (which means "The Voice of the People"). It came out in 2014.

Their second album was released in 2017. It was named "Trencarem l'imaginari," which means "Let's Break the Imaginary." A music video for their song "Mai més presons" ("No More Prisons") was released with this album. The album mixes reggae and rock music. It also has strong messages about fairness, helping people around the world, and standing up for what they believe in.

Many talented musicians helped with this album. Gemma Polo, a singer from the band Roba Estesa, sang on it. Xavi Sarrià from Obrint Pas and Josep Nadal from La Gossa Sorda provided backup vocals. Other musicians added percussion and lute to the songs.

In 2015, one of their songs became very popular. Their song "Sentiment comú" was chosen to represent the XXXVII Aplec dels Ports. This is a big yearly festival that celebrates the history of port cities. The festival takes place in a different city each year.

Music Videos and Special Events

In 2018, Mascarats recorded a music video called "Els carrers seran sempre nostres." This means "The Streets Will Always Be Ours." This video was made to honor important events that happened in Catalonia in 2017.

In July 2018, the band joined a special event called the "Free Forcadell" campaign. This was a benefit concert to support Carme Forcadell, who was a political leader in Catalonia. The event also called for the release of certain political figures and the return of others. Many famous musicians, actors, and journalists joined Mascarats at this event. Some of these included Maria del Mar Bonet, the band Gossos, and singer Gerard Quintana. The concert was first planned for July 21, but it was moved to September 15 because of rain.
